Thank you for inquiring about employment opportunities as a Deputy Sheriff with the Monroe County Sheriff's Office. We offer both sworn (Deputy) and non-sworn (Civilian) positions. The selection process takes about six to eight months, and begins with a written test. There is a non-refundable $25 testing fee.

Deputy Sheriff Requirements
Once you have successfully passed both the written examination and a physical agility test, you will undergo an intensive background investigation as well as psychological and medical reviews. Because we are committed to providing the highest quality deputies to the public, you will undergo a screening with a thorough background investigation. You must report any convictions on your record. If you have been convicted of a felony, you may not work for the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office. If you have been convicted of a misdemeanor or other violation, you may be barred from employment. You must cooperate truthfully and completely in all aspects of the investigation; falsified or omitted information may cause you to be disqualified.

Physical Fitness Testing
Your physical fitness will be evaluated to ensure that you are able to perform the duties of a deputy sheriff. Please be aware that an offer of employment is contingent upon the passing of all phases of the process.

Minimum Qualifications for All Positions
All candidates must:

  • Be a high school graduate or have GED diploma
  • Be a United States citizen
  • Possess a valid New York State Class "D" driver's license
  • Meet physical and medical standards
  • Have no felony convictions

Minimum Age Requirements
Age at time of appointment:

  • Road Patrol (full and part-time) - 20
  • Jailor
  • Court Security
  • Civil - 20

Additional Requirements
