  8. Protect Yourself Against Identity Theft

Individuals are using the Internet in increasing numbers for performing on-line transactions such as banking, making purchases, applying for credit, etc. While the Internet has greatly increased the efficiency by which we perform these transactions, it has made it easier for sinister individuals to obtain your personal information and steal your identity. Therefore, it is essential that you take certain precautions while using the Internet.

Identity theft is a growing concern for federal, state and local law enforcement authorities. In 2004 the Monroe County Sheriff's Office investigated 256 cases of Identity Theft, a 112% increase from 2003.

At the direction of Sheriff O'Flynn an Internet Safety presentation was designed to provide you with some helpful tips on how to safely surf the Internet.
